This summer, the International African American Museum celebrates the artistry and legacy of sweetgrass weaving and the broader traditions of Black Southern craftsmanship. Inspired by the exhibition middle of somewhere: the art and the legacy of Black Southern makers, Young Makers, Living Traditions, a Young Griots workshop series, invites youth and families to explore the living traditions that continue to shape the cultural landscape of the Lowcountry.

In this special workshop, participants will learn how to craft the iconic palmetto rose alongside the Palmetto Rose Company. A beloved symbol of Charleston and a tradition often seen woven along the city’s streets; the palmetto rose reflects the creativity, resilience, and artistry passed down through generations of local makers.
