Footlight Players, in residence at the Queen Street Playhouse, is honored to present The American Soldier by Doug Taurel for a special, one-weekend-only engagement this Memorial Day weekend in Charleston.
Drawn from real letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts spanning from the American Revolution to modern-day conflicts, The American Soldier is a gripping solo performance that brings to life the voices of those who have served. Through a seamless blend of storytelling and character transformation, Taurel embodies multiple soldiers across generations—capturing their bravery, vulnerability, humor, and heartbreak with striking immediacy.
Both intimate and epic in scope, the play offers a deeply human portrait of service and sacrifice, exploring not only the realities of war, but the personal stories often left untold. In the close quarters of the Playhouse, audiences will experience these powerful narratives up close, creating a shared moment of reflection, connection, and remembrance. The American Soldier is a one-man dramatic production that has been nominated for an Amnesty International Award and performed at The Kennedy Center in 2016, 2019 & 2024, The Library of Congress, Off-Broadway, New York Federal Reserve Bank, and American Legion's National Headquarters. It has toured the country in over 40 cities and been featured in the Washington Post, Huffington Post, Broadway World, Playbill, Military Times, Washington Times, and Time Out, to name a few.
