The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, in partnership with the International African American Museum, presents Southern Sonics – a celebration of the sound, soul, and scholarship of the Black South.

As Homecoming season takes hold across the region, we’re inviting alumni, students, and the community to come together in a spirit of pride and connection. From the marching bands to the yard, from gospel to hip-hop, the South has always been at the heart of Black culture’s rhythm and resonance. This year’s featured guest, David Banner, embodies that legacy – an acclaimed rapper, producer, activist, and proud graduate of Southern University. In conversation with Dr. Tamara T. Butler, Executive Director of the Avery Research Center, Banner brings his intellect and unapologetic Southern voice to a powerful dialogue on artistry, advocacy, and the rhythms that continue to shape Black America.
