Riversong Shearing will be joining us for the fourth year in a row to shear our flock of 30 Gulf Coast Sheep. This family-friendly event will showcase live shearing where you can learn the importance of this practice and how the wool is processed and used. You can also take part in exciting skirting and dyeing demonstrations with wool in the Stableyards.Â
This event is free for members and included with general admission. Children aged 13 and under can attend for free.
Indigo DyeingIn this hands-on activity, guests of all ages will learn about the connections between wool and indigo, a plant that produces natural dye. Participants will have the opportunity to dye their own square piece of fabric to take home with them.
Wool SkirtingEnjoy a live wool skirting demonstration using freshly shorn fleece from our own Gulf Coast Sheep. Learn how the wool is carefully sorted and trimmed to prepare it for washing, spinning, and future use.
Storytime Under the OaksFocusing on sheep, this special edition of Storytime Under the Oaks will take place at 10:30am and 11:30am. Kids ages 3-5 will read a sheep-themed story, do a sheep craft, and will have the opportunity to participate in a meet and greet!
Create Your Sheep CraftChildren can decorate their own fluffy sheep using water droppers and colorful liquid paint! Carefully squeeze and drip color onto the wool and explore creativity while connecting to the historic work of caring for sheep on a Lowcountry plantation.
