Description

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The community is invited to attend the Renee Kahn Memorial Charity Retrospective, a moving week-long celebration honoring the life, artistry, and lasting impact of renowned artist Renee Abend Kahn. The retrospective will take place June 22–28, 2026, at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE), located at 90 Hasell Street in downtown Charleston.

The exhibit will showcase an expansive collection of Renee Kahn’s artwork, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the emotional depth, vibrant color, and expressive body language that defined her artistic voice.

Renee was also known for her fashion — visitors will be privileged to purchase her distinctive clothing, show-stopping hats and shoes plus unique jewelry.

The retrospective culminates in a special charity celebration on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., featuring artwork, reflections on Renee’s life and legacy, and light refreshments.

Proceeds from art sales will benefit Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, International Society of Experimental Artists, and TEDxCharleston — organizations that held deep meaning in Renee’s life. Guests purchasing artwork will be invited to choose which organization will receive their contribution.

“Renee’s goal was to create the maximum intensity using the least amount of means,” organizers shared. “The simplicity of her work invited viewers to focus deeply on body language, color, and emotional connection.”

Color played a central role throughout Renee Kahn’s artistic career, serving as a powerful emotional language within her work.

Born in New York City in 1945, Renee began painting at a young age and studied at the Art Students League of New York and the High School of Music & Art. She majored in art at The City College of New York and later earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University.

Renee Kahn lived in Charleston, South Carolina, where she continued exhibiting her artwork nationally and throughout the Carolinas.

Her work was exhibited internationally, including the Eternal Eve exhibition in Jaffa, Israel, and the 23rd International Juried Show of Viridian Artists in New York City. She also exhibited with the International Society of Experimental Artists, the Missouri Watercolor Society, and Acrylic Painters USA, and was a signature member of ISEA.

Renee’s artwork appeared in Transparent Watercolor by Inessa Derkatsch, Revealing World Religions by Cynthia Eller, and in a lexicon of Jewish artists written by Hedwig Brenner.

Beyond her artwork, Renee was deeply committed to supporting fellow artists. She founded the Charleston Professional Artists Association, creating a space for artists to gather, exchange ideas, and strengthen Charleston’s creative community.

Her artistic vision was shaped by memories, emotion, global customs, and human connection. Through body language, design, and color, Renee explored themes of family, religion, relationships, motherhood, and life’s passages.
